چکیده

The design of the future High Energy Physics (HEP) particle detectors for the upgrade of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) experiments at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) is pushing technological frontiers to the limit trying to reach unprecedented accuracy in particles identification and particle production dynamics in ultra-relativistic hadron collisions. The thermal management of the on-detector electronics and the development of low mass integrated cooling systems have become a crucial task in the design of silicon tracking detectors for HEP applications. In this paper, we present a novel concept of low mass interconnected silicon microchannel devices for the future Inner Tracking System of the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) detector at LHC. This innovative design achieves the requirements of the detector while minimizing the total material budget.

Beam Test Performance and Simulation of Prototypes for the ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector

The silicon pixel detector (SPD) of the ALICE experiment in preparation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is designed to provide the precise vertex reconstruction needed for measuring heavy flavor production in heavy ion collisions at very high energies and high multiplicity. The SPD forms the innermost part of the Inner Tracking System (ITS) which also includes silicon drift and silic...

The LHCb Upgrade from 1 to 40 MHz readout

The LHCb experiment at the LHC will upgrade its detector to take data at luminosities of above 1033 cm−2s−1 from 2018 onwards. The fully upgraded detector will use a new front-end electronics to readout collision events at 40MHz. A new fully software based trigger will be implemented and will increase the trigger efficiencies, specially in the hadronic decay channels. The silicon vertex detecto...

Calibration of the Prompt L0 Trigger of the Silicon Pixel Detector for the ALICE Experiment

The ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector (SPD) is the innermost detector of the ALICE experiment at LHC. It includes 1200 front-end chips, with a total of ~10 pixel channels. The pixel size is 50 x 425 μm. Each front-end chip transmits a Fast-OR signal upon registration of at least one hit in its pixel matrix. The signals are extracted every 100 ns and processed by the Pixel Trigger (PIT) system, to ge...

Microfluidic cooling for detectors and electronics

Micro-channel cooling is gaining considerable attention as an alternative technique for cooling of high energy physics detectors and front-end electronics. This technology is being evaluated for future tracking devices, where material budget limitations are a major concern. It is currently under investigation as an option for the cooling of the NA62 Gigatracker silicon pixel detector, where a m...

Operational experience with the ALICE Pixel Detector

The ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector (SPD) constitutes the innermost detector of the ALICE experiment, which is the LHC experiment dedicated to the investigation of strongly interacting matter in heavy-ion collisions. The SPD consists of ∼10 million pixels organized in two layers at radii of 39 mm and 76 mm that cover a pseudorapidity range of |η |< 2 and |η |< 1.4, respectively. It provides the po...
